The tradition is passed down from father to son
Montenero is born on the slopes of Etna at 750 meters above sea level by the Bertino family, who, being owners of a medium-small Nerello Mascalese farm, decided to embark on the path of winemaking, something quite appreciated by the eldest son, a person who has been following the activity for over a year. Bertino Francesco (grandfather of the current heir) started in 1955 by buying this vineyard for work purposes, working on it for almost 5 years to bring the vineyard into production and start marketing the product. The idea was quite good and profitable, but due to little interest in regularizing the company, the company was never activated, something that fortunately changed with the arrival of the son Bertino Vincenzo, who, dedicating himself to the matter, managed to regularize it and start producing in a fiscal and systematic way, resuming vineyards and regularizing products, and over the years reaching various brands to further enhance the work done over the years.
We present to you our vineyard
Active since 2018, the company strictly produces Nerello Mascalese DOP and IGP red, with strictly manual processing systems to make the cultivation distinctly undisturbed and organic, typical Etna planting systems (alberello) with spur cordon pruning typical of the area. The vineyard landscape is composed of terraces and lava stone walls with predominantly sciaroso soil.
Montenero vinifies its wines in the homeland cellar in Castiglione di Sicilia and maintains the vineyards in contrada grotta paglia, Castiglione di Sicilia (CT). Over the years, the family has worked to make their product marketable and quite unique by producing two labels over the years, including a Sicilian red wine and a DOC Etna red (pure).
Since 2018, Francesco Bertino (the son) has joined the company. Passionate about viticulture, he takes charge of the situation and seeks to advance it with innovative and especially organic systems, in order to further enhance the work done by his family over the years.
